The Proposal
Dreams fill our daily lives in numerous ways. Each night as we drift off to sleep we experience the process of dreaming. Feelings, thoughts, and images come alive as we dream. When we are awake we can often drift off in our thoughts, losing attention for a few moments as we “daydream”. People often aspire to be or do great things, create inventions, cultivate ideas, or “dream” of possibilities. As a point of reference, people use the word “dream” in their everyday life expressions such as, “The man of my dreams,” “I wouldn’t dream of hurting you,”or “One can only dream…” Historically, dreams of inventions, innovations and ideas are what helped to shape our world, and advance us into modern society. In a way, one can correlate our dreams (not necessarily the subconscious ones while we sleep) to our goals, values, ideas, creative processes, or visions of future endeavors that is the cornerstone to making things happen, move, grow, advance and learn.
My vision for this project would be to incorporate all of the different ways that people dream: using factual information about the physical process that occurs while people sleep and dream; interviews with people like Walt Disney whose ideas and dreams were formulated into innovative concepts that changed the entertainment industry; clips of speeches from leaders like Martin Luther King who spoke about his dreams for peace, equality and acceptance; pictures and video clips of things that people dream to do, aspire for and daydream about, all to be incorporated into a video mash-up about “Dreams.” To provide a more eclectic benefit, I will put this to music that incorporates the spirit and meaning of people’s dreams to songs such as:
Hilary Duff- “Hey Now- This is what Dreams are made of.”
Disney’s Cinderella: “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes.”
Judy Garland’s: “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”
Travie McCoy ft. Bruno Mars: "Billionaire.”
The risks involved for taking on this topic may involve an overabundance of information and concepts that need to be sifted through in order to come up with the most significant information to provide the viewer with an overall experience and understanding of “dreams” in a small amount of time. Another risk would be creating the ability to convince the viewers that dreams are more than what happens when we sleep, and that our aspirations and hopes can be included into the meaning of dreams.
I would like to try to allow the viewer to experience the dreaming process by incorporating pictures that would serve as a type of subliminal message such as butterflies (that one feels in their stomach as they meet the man of their dreams), heart beat sounds (that one feels as they dream of something exciting), or the fixed focal point and muffled sounds (that one feels as they daydream).
