Santrock, John W. Educational Psychology. New York: McGraw-Hill Companies,Inc., 2008.
Educational Psychology provides an in depth look at how we develop, learn and grow as individuals. It also helps us to understand how behaviors are formed and how we function in the diverse world we live in. Numerous theorists and their theories are explained in the context of how motivation, behavior, development, social interaction and learning all take place. Within this context Maslow’s theory of a hierarchy of needs is explained and explored. From children through adulthood these needs are addressed at various stages.
I am using this book for a better look at Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. I will use this information in my project as a reference for my information about self actualization, which is the highest need in his pyramid. To my understanding, the lower end of the diagram are the basic needs, which must be met in order to move on up. Self actualization is at the top. I will use this information to exemplify how our aspirations (dreams) helps us to attain this level of need.
Rubin, Gretchen. The Happiness Project. New York: HarperCollins Publishing, 2009.
This book explores the theory of self actualization by providing the year long journey of a woman who chooses different tasks and projects to complete in order for her to find happiness and fulfillment in her life. She decided to focus on creating a guide to help people find the means and methods to work on satisfying their needs in order to help them better find and achieve their goals and ultimately be happier. She provides examples and suggestions to make herself happier in an attempt to provide inspiration to others to do the same.
I will use this book as a guide to get suggestions and examples of how someone uses various techniques to make things happen in their lives to make them happier. This is part of the steps needed for self actualization. The author cites examples of inspirational people who have followed their dreams and reached this level. Examples she cites are Kennedy, Lincoln, and Oprah, possibly providing me with additional people to incorporate into my project.
Gabler, Neal. Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination. New York: Vintage Books and Random House Inc., 2007.
This book provides an in depth look at the life of famous Walt Disney. His story includes his life growing up as a child, his development of his artistic abilities and his aspirations to change the entertainment industry. His imagination and creative ability guided his dreams. Disney overcame many obstacles growing up and remained steadfast in his desire to forge new paths in art and media. He is known as an innovator, a creator and a transformer in this industry. This book provides a detailed description of his life and career along with numerous pictures and photos.
I will use this book as a guide to understanding how Walt Disney followed his dreams to create dreams for others. He used his artistic talents and intense imagination to create world-changing ideas. I will be using many of Disney’s quotes found here in my project that helps to show how Disney was a self actualized person by using his dreams to acquire this. Example would be “If you can dream it, you can do it” (Walt Disney).
Carver, C. S., & Baird, E. (1998). The American dream revisited: Is it what you want or why you want it that matters?. Psychological Science (Wiley-Blackwell), 9(4), 289.
This article appearing in Psychological Science journal explores the research conducted about the influences some goals, dreams and aspirations have on self actualization. “Aspiring to community involvement-helping others in need, passing on knowledge to the next generation, making the world a better place- was positively related to self actualization.” (Carver 1998) The article looks into reasons why people pursue their goals, reasons for their aspirations and how they achieve self actualization.
I hope to use this information in my project to help provide the message how pursuing dreams helps to reach self actualization. The article helped me to understand that people who achieve satisfaction from this are not in it for simply the money, but have greater reasons of helping others and inspiring change and knowledge in the world. This would support the examples I am using in my project, for example Martin Luther King jr., and Walt Disney.
“Why Do We Dream?” Youtube. Youtube. Web. November 19, 2013.
This video discusses some reasons as to why people dream the things that they do. The speaker goes over some of the different viewpoints researchers have on it.
