Reflection 1:
Throughout my college experience so far, my writing classes had me writing various papers, from creative ones to research based ones. This assignment definitely took me out of my comfort zone of traditional writing and had me compose a meaningful project through the making of a video, or in other words, a mashup. I have never really had practice with video editing, so this assignment scared me a little. Luckily, my brother has made many videos and movies before, so he is a professional at editing. Knowing I had him to help me eased my mind a little.
One of the hardest parts of the assignment was coming up with a topic that would be interesting and would be able to convey a great message. After much brainstorming, I found a topic that I was happy with. I did much research on the topic before searching for the clips that I would use throughout the video. Once I got an in depth knowledge on my topic, I got started on finding sources for the video.
I was on a search for the clips and pictures that I would need to really convey the message that I wanted my audience to get out of the video. It took a while, but with a little help and guidance from my family members, I found a variety of sources. I found clips from movies, speeches, songs and pictures. As I said before, I have never edited a video before, so this whole thing was a new experience for me. Although this was difficult at first, I did not give up. At first, I tried using iMovie to edit my video, but it was not working for me, so instead, I used Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 to edit it. It took me a while to get the hang of editing the video. My brother had to give me a full tutorial on how the program worked, but I learned quickly and was editing it on my own. After finding all of the sources I needed and putting them into the program, I started to edit them together in the video. This was definitely the longest part of this whole assignment. I wanted to make sure that the video was entertaining and flowed nicely. After hours and hours of moving clips and adding music to the right spots, my video started to look pretty good. I am the kind of person that needs feedback on work so I was constantly showing my progress to my family, and they all seemed to like it.
I am actually proud of the video I made. Considering this is my first encounter with video editing, I still think I did a pretty good job. This assignment opened my eyes to the power of videos. I think that the mashup I made communicates my idea a lot stronger than if I had just written a paper about it. Although I may have gotten very frustrated over the course of completing the assignment, it was a new experience and something I could be interested in doing again in the future.

Reflection 2:
It took me a while to come up with a topic for this assignment. I went back and forth with ideas that I would possibly use. My first thought was to make it about the different types of dreams. However, I was told that this topic would be too broad, so my teacher, Professor Kopp, guided me in narrowing it down. The focus of my video was following your dreams to achieve self-actualization. I took a lot of time to pick out movies, speeches, songs, and pictures to make sure I got that message across to the viewer. I also made sure to pick people that were well known so the viewer will know each of their big accomplishments. We begin with ideas and innovations created by men who defied conventionality and aspired to create life changing events. Musical and entertainment icons, political and spiritual leaders and creative geniuses reach their potential by continuously striving to create newer, bigger and better ideas and creations by following their dreams. Some of the dreamers featured in the mashup are Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, Steve Jobs, and my personal favorite, Walt Disney. All of these people epitomize the concept of self-actualization. Each of their accomplishments are solid examples of how their big ideas that changed the world and allowed them each to become self-actualized. By putting in clips of some of their biggest accomplishments or movements, it lets the viewer see how much of an impact they all had.
Although each person or group of people shown in the video were significant to the world, one that was mentioned more than others was Walt Disney. To me, he is the ultimate dreamer. He took the idea of a mouse and made it into a so much more. Everything that Disney created was so amazing and magical.
The pieces I picked to put in the video are moving in their own way. In my opinion, taking these different types of medias (movies, music, pictures, etc.) and mixing them together into one video has such a greater impact then each of them separately. Yes, the impact they had on their own was amazing, but showing each of people in the video’s great accomplishments in a row mixing it with songs to go along with it just makes them seem even greater. Mixing in some movie clips, pictures, and quotes just adds to the message of the significance of achieving self-actualization.
Doing this whole assignment has taught me a lot. Not only did I learn how to edit videos, but also I learned the power of a video. I wanted to make sure that my video would be able to clearly get the message that I wanted across to the audience, which I believe it did. It was a lot of fun tweaking and editing the video to get it exactly how I wanted it to be. I wanted the video to flow nicely and be entertaining. I worked very hard on accomplishing that and I am very proud of the finished product.
